Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Unexpected Presence

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
